DEI Should Be About Building Bridges, Not Amplifying Grievances

True diversity embraces the multiplicity of human experience.

The narrative of higher education as an elitist enclave disconnected from the broader society is compelling yet incomplete. It's undeniable that certain aspects of academia may seem insular or out of touch. However, the mission of DEI is to bridge these gaps, fostering environments where diverse experiences and perspectives are celebrated.

J.D. Vance's recollection of his "island of misfit toys" at Yale Law School highlights what higher education can and should be — a place where individuals from varied backgrounds converge to form a cohesive, supportive community. This transformative experience is the goal of many DEI initiatives.

DEI should be about building bridges, not amplifying grievances. Effective programs help students, faculty, and staff learn from each other, strengthening the community.

Higher education must embrace its role as a crucible for diverse ideas and experiences. DEI's role should not be to divide but to facilitate constructive dialogue, where every voice is heard — even (and especially) when we don't see eye to eye.

As critics challenge higher education, it is imperative that we reaffirm our commitment to the type of DEI that has a renewed focus on diversity of ideas, beliefs, and experiences to prepare students for a complex, interconnected world. We can't afford to wait.
